I'm a strengths based play therapist who believes that EVERYONE has GREATNESS inside of them! My goal when working with children and families is to focus on their strengths to build positive self esteem and to help restore peace and balance to the family unit. I specifically work with children who are trying to process change, divorce/separation, bullying, social rejection, grief, and school anxiety, just to name a few. I help children to recognize their own greatness, develop coping and problem solving skills, process trauma, and provide parents with the tools to help manage behaviors and emotionally support their kids at home.
Parenting is the most difficult job in the world and it really does take a village! I commend you for having the courage to take the first step towards getting help!
Play is a child's first language. It can be difficult to put certain feelings into words and expressive therapies like play, art, music and role playing can communicate the unspeakable and help children process strong emotions and life changing events.
Play Therapy Helps Children:
How Long Does Play Therapy Take?
Each play therapy session varies in length but usually last about 30 to 50 minutes. Sessions are usually held weekly. Research suggests that it takes an average of 20 play therapy sessions to resolve the problems of the typical child referred for treatment. Of course, some children may improve much faster while more serious or ongoing problems may take longer to resolve (Carmichael, 2006; Landreth, 2002).
How is the Family Involved in Play Therapy?
Families play an important role in children's healing processes. The interaction between children's problems and their families is always complex. Sometimes children develop problems as a way of signaling that there is something wrong in the family. Other times the entire family becomes distressed because the child's problems are so disruptive. In all cases, children and families heal faster when they work together. The play therapist will make some decisions about how and when to involve some or all members of the family in the play therapy. At a minimum, the therapist will want to communicate regularly with the child's caretakers to develop a plan for resolving problems as they are identified and to monitor the progress of the treatment.
Sand tray therapy is a nonverbal, projective form of therapy that uses sand, water, and miniature figures (people, animals, buildings, natural elements, etc.) to create scenes in a tray.
